The DGR came in to being as the first crop commodity research unit under the category of NRC's (National Research Centres) of the ICAR. It was established in 1979 to give a fillip to research for enhancing productivity of groundnut in keeping with its importance among the oilseed crops of India. The NRCG was elevated to the level of a directorate in the year 2009 and rechristened as the Directorate of Groundnut Research (DGR).

Research Activities
The multi disciplinary team of scientists conducts research on applied and basic aspects of groundnut improvement through core and externally funded research projects.
The DGR is also vested with the responsibility of coordinating field based groundnut research for all the groundnut growing regions of the country through a centrally sponsored scheme viz. AICRP on Groundnut. The research under AICRP-G is persued in association with various SAU's. Currently there are 22 research centres located in different agro-climatic regions of India.
